Hellboy Hot Wings

In the August Loot Crate: Anti-Hero unboxing there were two recipes, one for Hellboy Hot Wings, and one for Anti-Potato Salad.  I love hot wings, so made them first even though they’re already pretty low carb.  I’ll have my own version of the potato salad – my Anti-Fauxtato Salad – in Wednesday’s post.

I think in the movies (By the way, where the in the blazes is Hellboy 3?!), Hellboy ate everything a human does, just in larger quantities.  I remember he liked Baby Ruth candy bars because that’s what the professor/his dad first lured him with in the beginning.  He also ate massive quantities of chili, pancakes, and nachos.  I don’t remember there being wings, but it’s a safe bet that he loves them, and I’m sure he would eat spicy hot wings!  What else would a denizen of hell eat?  People?  Pfft.

Loot Crate’s Hellboy Hot Wings are so good, and there isn’t much you need to do to make them lower in carbs.  Unless you’re breading them before frying, wings (especially in a hot sauce) are already a great low carb option for dinner nights.  Or lunch nights.  Or snacks.  Even breakfast, if you’re one of those weirdos who don’t have to have breakfast food for breakfast.  I love breakfast for dinner, but not so keen on dinner for breakfast.

I adjusted a few of the ingredients, but for the most part I left this recipe as is.  I used:

Hellboy Hot Wings

– 4 lbs of chicken wings
– 2 cups of Frank’s Hot Sauce
– 1 cup buttermilk
– 1 stick of Challenge butter
– 1/2 tsp + 1/4 tsp garlic powder
– 1/2 tsp black pepper
– 1/2 tsp honey
– 1 tsp coconut aminos (you can use soy sauce for low carb cooking in small amounts, but if you’re also eating gluten free I recommend coconut aminos)
– oil for frying

I made a short video to show how I made the wings.  There is music in the video, so mute your volume (or turn it down) if you don’t want to hear it or would get in trouble for watching a video at work.

However, I used the Hellboy theme music for this video, so it takes my normal, absentminded, cooking to epic levels.

Because I didn’t really recreate this recipe, I don’t want to offend anyone by trying to claim it as my own.  So instead of my normal layout of step-by-step instructions I’m just going to show a few pictures of my process with general instructions.  For the full recipe, please see Loot Crate’s picture above and use my alterations if desired.

First, add hot sauce, buttermilk, garlic powder, black pepper, and honey into a large bowl and mix.

Add wings and toss to coat heavily.  Cover with plastic wrap and let marinade overnight.

Heat oil between 350° to 375°.  Fry wings in small batches of 8 – 9 wings.  Fry for 12 – 15 minutes or until a nice, crisp, golden brown.  Place cooked wings on paper towel lined plate to cool slightly.

Oh my glob…

We enjoyed these very much as is; however, I wanted the full Hellboy experience, so made the sauce too.  Over medium heat, melt a stick of butter and add in the soy sauce/coconut aminos, and hot sauce.  Heat, stirring occasionally, for 5 – 7 minutes.

Toss wings into sauce in small batches if desired.

Put them on a pretty plate and then devour them like the hungry hell beast you are.

Though we enjoyed the hell out of these (pun intended), I remembered why I stopped deep frying things a long time ago.  You would think it was for the health benefits, right?  But no, I love food too much silly!  It’s purely because it takes me 20 minutes to clean up the aftermath.

I may have to make an exception every once and awhile though.  These were fantastic!

Look for a new post on Wednesday when I attempt to make the Anti-Potato Salad low carb!  Duh duh Duuuuuuuuuh!

I hope everyone enjoys!  Let me know what you think in the comments!

Please don’t mind the mess.

Video Credits

Music – The song was originally on the Hellboy Soundtrack titled, Main Title, by Marco Beltrami, and I’m assuming all rights reserved belong to him.  However, the one I used in my video was a random sampling I found on YouTube, and then did a search for the MP3 and found it on MP3 Downloads.  The only acknowledgement I can find to give is to Emily Wilson for uploading the extended version, but as it does sound slightly different from Beltrami’s original version, I’m at a loss for who is the actual owner of the the variation I used in my video.  I can’t even tell if Wilson is the one who altered the original, or if that was someone else.  If anyone knows how to properly cite and credit the version I’m using, please educate me!

Still keeping fingers crossed for a Hellboy 3.
