Tuesday was the last day of the school year for Aidan and Seth. It’s hard to believe that Seth will be a senior next year and Aidan will be starting middle school.
I keep telling them to stop growing up, but they just won’t listen!
That’s okay I guess. They’re growing up to be pretty good kids… or, a pretty good young adult in Seth’s case.
So summer break hasn’t even officially started yet, and Aidan has already asked to go swimming at memaw’s house.
I’m fortunate enough to work from home, but I do still work (for those that think otherwise). So I sadly had to tell him we might go later when Mom gets off work. The look of doubt spoke volumes. I might have said this to him before.
Unfortunately it rained about an hour later, so we actually never did go swimming. Let the guilt-filled summer begin!
Summer fun has begun.
Maybe I’ll avoid a little guilt this summer though. Unlike in the last couple years, I’ve actually thought ahead and have put in requests for PTO on several different days. I plan on taking the kids (yes, Seth will be forced to go) to Six Flags, the zoo, the local state parks, and we have a week planned for an extended family vacation in Branson.
This may all seem like normal summertime activities to you, and we have done these things often in the past, but this year I planned it. I’m not a forgetful, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, lucky-they-don’t-just-eat-frozen-pizza-for-dinner-everyday mom.
And by the way, if you are that type of mom, it’s perfectly fine! I’m not knocking it. I’m just usually a very disorganized person, and it’s one of the things I wanted to challenge myself with in my “Fit for 40” quest. It’s just something that has always bothered me personally, and I would like to work on it… at least a little.
I’ve been known to say if it’s not on a post-it note, I don’t remember it. Of course, these days, it’s more like, if it’s not in my phone with three backup alarms, it doesn’t exist.
I’m not suddenly going to turn into the Queen of Organization, I like my life a little chaotic; but, it would be nice not to feel the stress of pulling together a last minute birthday party because even though I know the day my son was born, I didn’t realize it was coming up so soon!
Like I’m currently doing for Aidan… whose birthday is in a week… and I’m totally unprepared for. *sigh*
At least I planned some summer activities for them, right? Get them away from the games every once in awhile. Make sure they are aware that there is life outside of Minecraft and League of Legends.
Unashamed mom brag.
Aidan actually has a really good idea for a YouTube channel that will get them outdoors occasionally. I don’t want to give too much away yet, but once we decide on logistics, he’ll probably be doing that soon. I’ll be sure to let everyone know if/when the first video goes up. I say if, because sometimes he comes up with ideas, but then doesn’t follow them through. I think he’s trying to find his own way though, and I want to encourage him in that.
And along the same note, Seth has four videos up on YouTube now under Scarf Nation. I won’t pretend to understand what is going on, but I’m proud of him for trying.
Fun in the sun.
Coincidentally, as I was writing this, a post came through Facebook regarding free things to do in my area. If you’re looking for things to do in or around your city, Google “free things to do in yourcityhere”. We are lucky enough to have many free parks, animal exhibits, and outdoor entertainment near where I live, so I’ll definitely have to pick a few to drag the boys to.
This is going to be a summer to remember!
Okay, I promise not to go overboard.
Now if you’ll excuse me… I, um, have a birthday party to plan.
Please don’t mind the mess.
If you enjoyed this post, I’d be grateful if you’d help me by emailing it to a friend, or sharing it on Twitter or Facebook. Thank you!
